🧩 What is Bloom’s Taxonomy?

Benjamin Bloom (1956) created a hierarchical framework used by educators to classify and structure educational objectives according to their complexity, design instructional strategies, and create effective assessments. The taxonomy encompasses three primary domains:

The original 1956 taxonomy focused solely on a cognitive model of learning; an affective model was published in 1964, and a psychomotor model in the 1970s.


📚 Original Cognitive Domain (1956)

The cognitive domain involves knowledge and the development of intellectual skills. There are six major categories, from simple to complex:

  1. Knowledge: Recalling information (e.g., historical dates, scientific terms).
  2. Comprehension: Understanding concepts (e.g., summarizing theories).
  3. Application: Using information in practical contexts (e.g., solving math problems).
  4. Analysis: Breaking down information to examine relationships (e.g., comparing literature themes).
  5. Synthesis: Combining knowledge to form new ideas (e.g., developing hypotheses).
  6. Evaluation: Judging information based on criteria (e.g., critiquing research).

🔄 Revised Cognitive Taxonomy (2001)

The 2001 revision by Krathwohl and Anderson shifted the original cognitive categories from passive nouns to active verbs, emphasizing learner engagement and active participation.

Lower Order Thinking

  • Remember: list, define, identify, recall, name
  • Understand: explain, summarize, interpret, paraphrase
  • Apply: use, demonstrate, implement, solve

Higher Order Thinking

  • Analyse: compare, contrast, examine, differentiate
  • Evaluate: assess, critique, justify, defend
  • Create: design, invent, develop, compose, propose
🔑 Key difference: The original used nouns (Knowledge, Comprehension…); the revised uses active verbs (Remembering, Understanding…) and elevates “Creating” as the highest form of cognitive activity, emphasizing innovation and creativity.

🧠 Knowledge Dimension (Revised Taxonomy)

Bloom’s revised taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001) introduces the Knowledge Dimension, which complements the cognitive domain by clarifying what learners are expected to know.


❤️ The Affective Domain (1964)

This domain deals with emotions, feelings, values, enthusiasm, motivations, and attitudes. The five major categories (from simplest to most complex):

  1. Receiving: Awareness and willingness to hear new ideas.
  2. Responding: Active participation and engagement.
  3. Valuing: Internalizing values and recognizing their significance.
  4. Organizing: Integrating new values within one’s existing value system.
  5. Characterizing: Consistently embodying internalized values in everyday behavior.

🏃 The Psychomotor Domain (Simpson, 1972)

Includes physical movement, coordination, and use of motor skills. Development requires practice and is measured in speed, precision, or technique. The seven major categories:

  1. Perception: Using sensory cues to guide motor activity.
  2. Set: Readiness and willingness to perform.
  3. Guided Response: Learning through imitation and trial-and-error.
  4. Mechanism: Developing habitual movements performed with confidence.
  5. Complex Overt Response: Skilled, efficient, and automatic execution of complex tasks.
  6. Adaptation: Adjusting motor skills effectively in response to different conditions.
  7. Origination: Creating novel and original motor skills.
