Piaget's Theory of
Cognitive Development

Jean Piaget (1896–1980) — a Swiss psychologist who studied the intellectual and logical abilities of children — theorized that cognitive development proceeds in four stages that follow the same sequential order. He proposed that the thinking process develops through each stage until a child can think logically.

Understanding cognitive development helps us organize appropriate learning environments and plan developmentally appropriate learning activities.

4 Stages

Piaget's Four Stages

Sensorimotor
Birth – 2 Years

Infants use senses and motor capabilities to experience the environment. Develops object permanence — hidden objects continue to exist.

Thinking only by doing.

Preoperational
2 – 7 Years

Preschool years. Develops symbolic thinking and language. Still learns from concrete material; exhibits egocentrism; decisions dominated by perceptions.

Centers on one dimension.

Concrete Operational
7 – 11 Years

Elementary grades. Begins to think logically about personal experience. Can classify, order objects, solve conservation tasks. Thought becomes reversible.

Formal Operational
11+ Years

Abstract thinking, planning, hypothesis testing. Can consider many possibilities, solve complex problems, and use hypothetical-deductive reasoning.

Piaget's Key Concepts

Schema A representation in the mind of a set of ideas or actions that go together.
Assimilation Taking in new information into our previously existing schemas.
Accommodation Altering existing ideas or schemas as a result of new experiences.
Equilibration The process of achieving balance between assimilation and accommodation; moves the child from one stage to the next.

How children learn (Piaget): Learning results from experience and involves the construction of knowledge through assimilation and accommodation. Existing mental structures (schemas) are necessary for adapting to new information. The balancing process — equilibration — is central to cognitive development. Development proceeds through gradual, stage-like levels.
